1. Spending money you don't have and have no hope of getting is a recipe for disaster.

 

2. More government is rarely the solution to a problem.

 

3. Each individual must take primary responsibility for his own well-being and that of his family.

 

4. Every judge and prosecutor has a duty to apply the law as it is written, and not as he or she wishes it could be.

 

5. The people of a nation should determine for themselves the laws which will govern their lives.

Although the above ideas are common sense to us, we have learned that they are not common sense to everyone.  Bigger government, larger debts, irresponsibility, emotional decisionmaking and internationalism seem to be the order of the day.

At this time of Thanksgiving, we all have many things to be thankful for.

We can be thankful that we still live in a free nation and have the right to speak out for liberty and against injustice.

We can be thankful for the men and women who have toiled, and fought, and died to establish, and win, and protect our precious freedoms.

We can be thankful that we live in the nation that serves, more than any other, as a beacon of liberty to a darkened world.

One thing that we should never neglect to be thankful for is each other.  We can be thankful that, in this crucial struggle for liberty, WE DO NOT STAND ALONE.  We stand SHOULDER-TO-SHOULDER with millions of brothers and sisters united for the cause of liberty.

Going forward, we should always remember to be thankful TO one another.  Each of you deserves a sincere 'thank you' from all of your fellow citizens for getting UP, getting OUT and getting INVOLVED, and we should not be shy in expressing that gratitude to one another.  If you're reading this, please know that we are thankful for you, because of the role you have played in making this happen.

We can and should all be thankful to have the opportunity to stand alongside such an incredible group of people fighting for the common principles we all hold dear.  This is a movement of regular citizens willing to step into the ring and mix it up with the self-anointed 'elites.'  None of us are professionals, but we're sharp and focused, and what we don't know we will learn.  We can and should be thankful and PROUD to be a part of this movement.

And for those on the left (and right) who continue to suggest, with a mixture of hope and fear, that this grassroots revolt is somehow fading, we have five words for them:

But the conversation sounds a lot more like a Presidential monologue than an honest, two-way discussion. Literally millions of Americans have rallied against the proposed Health Care legislation, yet they have been ignored and insulted.

Massachusetts Colony

Boston, Massachusetts

January, 1774

We believe it is healthy for a historic effort to be subject to so much scrutiny and debate. The failure of past attempts at workable colonial policy is a reminder that this question represents a defining issue in our colonial history — it is well worth the time it takes to get it right. We are confident that we will get this right.

Already, three committees have passed critical colonial reform legislation, and we will work closely with those three committees to produce one strong piece of colonial reform legislation that the House of Commons will approve in the coming months.

In the meantime, as colonial delegates spend time at home during the recess, they are talking with their constituents about the new colonial tax reform and the Second Quartering Act. The dialogue between delegates and constituents is at the heart of our system and plays an integral role in assuring that the legislation written in Parliament reflects an appreciation of the genuine needs and concerns of all the colonists.

However, it is now evident that an ugly campaign is underway not merely to misrepresent the new legislation, but to disrupt public meetings and prevent delegates and constituents from conducting a civil dialogue.  These tactics have included:

Hanging (and even burning) delegates and public officials in effigy

 

Protesters holding signs displaying tombstones sporting the names of delegates. 

 

Shouting and drowning out those who wanted to explain how the new colonial policies will work.  

 

Dumping three entire shiploads of tea into Boston harbor this past December.

 

Setting the HMS Gaspee on fire.

 

Tarring and feathering public officials at town hall meetings throughout the colonies. 

 

Ransacking of many of the offices (and even homes) of public officials.

These sorts of cheap political stunts are simply not conducive to a rational and reasoned explanation of how, for example, the new colonial taxes will be raised, and on whom they will be levied. 

These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the official truth itself. Drowning out the voice of the governors and delegates is simply un-British. Drowning out the truth is how we have failed to settle these matters for decades.  The loud voices of dissent are those of a tiny but overly-vocal minority, which are, truth be told, not loyal patriots at all but rather well-paid professional activists in the employ of indemnity companies.  They claim they represent a natural movement of the people, but in truth they are to a natural movement of the people what a green carpet is to a patch of real grass.  Thus, Samuel Adams and his ilk should be identified for what they are : GREEN CARPET.

Colonial policy is complex. It touches every colonist. It drives our economy. People must be allowed to learn the official truth from the governors and delegates without being sidetracked by noisy voices and cheap political stunts and green carpet operations funded by the indemnities.

This month, despite all the disruptions by the unwashed rabble, delegates will listen to their constituents back home and explain the new colonial legislation. We are confident that our principles of reasonable colonial policy will stand up to any and all critics.

Now — with colonists strongly supporting the new colonial poliices, with Parliament reaching consensus on a plan, and with King George squarely behind it, Parliament is closer than ever to this goal.

This Summer, at long last, we must reach it.
